Recently, HiandBye Productions was accused of plagiarizing the film “The Ladder Theory” by a rival production company that stated:
CallawayCinema I’m sorry guys, but this is BLANTANT plagiarism. You think other people don’t have the internet? You know somebody else sat down and actually worked on putting those words together? Here is was my response:Dear Callaway Cinema,
In regards to your statement that our film was “plagiarized”, I choose to dissent on behalf of our production. First off, if you are angry over the fact that you feel fooled that perhaps the writer of this film was some sort of sociological genius, I am in fact not, so I apologize that this was not made clear in the opening credits. As many people know, especially the internet crowd, youtubers and those who are active in the seduction community, the Ladder Theory is a popularly held idea formulated by Dallas Lynn. So by stating that those words were plagiarized is like saying the film “Creation” blatantly plagiarized the theories of Darwinism. It is like citing “The Declaration of Independence was written in 1776”, it unnecessary because it is a commonly held idea.
What we did was choose to respond to “the ladder theory” as a form of social commentary as it was made evident in the end of the film where Michael inevitably triumphed over this so-called “theory”. In other words, it was the market that we were trying to capture and inspire by leading those who hold this external locus of belief to be in control of one’s destiny, as it is evident in nearly every guy’s life who has at one point or another secretly been in love with a close friend. The point of this project was to show a counter opinion. Judging by the responses we received from those who have indeed heard of the theory, we obviously have done our job well, while at the same time we attempted to provoke intellectualism by giving people something to critically think about; “Is it possible for a friend to become more than friends?”. So by asking us whether or not we thought that our audience had access to the internet, well, yeah that was sorta the point.
Regards,
Erick
